The 5 Most Common Ford 351 Windsor Engine Problems

Ford produced the 5.8L small-block 351w engine from 1968 until 1997. It has been one of Ford's most reliable and productive engines to date.
The 351W had several modifications and upgrades over the course of its almost 30-year existence. The Windsor family, a collection of 90-degree OHV small-Block V8 engines built from 1961 to 2002, includes the 351W.

An important caveat: Given how outdated these engines are now, many of these issues are problematic. The engines' blocks, internals, heads, and other components are incredibly sturdy and practically bulletproof.
1. Coolant leaks around the 351W timing cover
The most frequent reason for catastrophic engine failure is that the 351W engines do not tolerate more heat well. It's crucial to keep your ford 351w engine coolant level at the recommended level in order to avoid overheating and significant engine damage. Fortunately, the gaskets are inexpensive and rather simple to DIY if you are familiar with engines.
2. Broken Exhaust Manifolds on the 351 Windsor
Each of the two exhaust manifolds on the 351W is in charge of four cylinders. Around 120,000 miles, cast iron exhaust pipes on the 351W are prone to fracture. Other than changing the manifolds in advance, hardly much preventative maintenance should be done.
3. Windsor 351 Gasket & Rear Main Seal Oil Leaks
Any ford 351w engine that hasn't had a brand-new rebuild or gasket repairs probably leaks oil now or will in the future. In general, the gaskets do not survive very long beyond 150,000 miles, especially if they are original. Replacement of the rear main seal is only a few bucks but requires extensive amounts of labor.

4. Broken Intake Manifold on a 351W
The manifold bolts on the 351 Windsor are prone to breaking. This may affect the engine's air-to-fuel ratios and impair performance. The good news is that changing the bolts is as easy as changing the manisturage manitur gasket. It is advisable to check the manifold gasket for leaks while you are at it.
5. Weak Cylinder Blocks for 351W
Ford modified the block castings in 1975 to create a block that was lower in weight. Ford accomplished this by essentially using less aluminum in the block. Older blocks seem to be able to handle power levels that are more in the range of 1000whp. Be cautious while aiming for high power levels.
