The symptoms of torque converter issues are sometimes mistaken for those of a failed gearbox. People will thus wind up spending thousands of dollars only to replace or have their gearbox rebuilt.

They are unaware that the torque converter could be playing up instead. Torque converter replacement is substantially less expensive than transmission replacement.

The effort required by the vehicle to maintain the same speed levels increases when the torque converter develops a malfunction. The engine will need to turn more times per minute to operate, which will reduce the transmission fluid pressure and fuel efficiency.

Slipping Gears

A broken fin or bearing might make a shift in the transmission take longer than it should or cause the transmission to fall out of gear because a torque converter converts engine torque into the hydraulic pressure required to shift gears inside the gearbox.

Insufficient or excessive fluid in the transmission can also contribute to slipping.

Overheating of the transmission

If your automobile is overheating according to the temperature gauge, there may have been a loss in fluid pressure, or your torque converter may be malfunctioning. A converter won't be able to transfer power from the engine to the transmission if it is overheated.

Shuddering

You can feel trembling at speeds of between 40 and 45 mph if the lockup clutch inside the torque converter is beginning to malfunction. It often seems like you're driving over a rocky road with numerous little bumps, and the sensation is noticeable.

Contaminated Transmission fluid

Automatic transmission fluid is put into a torque converter (ATF). The internal components may suffer harm if the fluid is polluted. As a result, one of the turbines may have damaged fins or worn bearings on the stator.

Unusual Sounds

Strange noises coming from the torque converter are not uncommon as it starts to fail. You might hear noises like "whirring" from worn-out bearings or "clattering" from damaged turbine blades.

Increased Stall Speed

The "stall speed" is the RPM level at which the torque converter must attain in order to transfer power from the engine to the transmission.

If the torque converter is damaged, it won't be able to correctly convert the engine's rotational force into hydraulic pressure. As a result, the transmission will have to wait longer before starting the engine.
