In 1964, the Ford Motor Company created the C4 transmission. It was initially marketed as the "3 Speed Cruise-O-Matic." It was designed to funct

ion with automobiles that had rear-wheel drive.

For the first five years of manufacturing, the transmission remained largely unchanged. The initial design modifications were performed in 1970 by Ford engineers. The C4's internals was modified to handle more power, and its endurance was boosted.

Despite still weighing 110 pounds, this transmission is still quite popular among bracket racers. The C4's case is detachable, unlike the majority of early transmissions whose bell housing and case are welded together. It enables it to be fitted specifically to other vehicles. Any model year of the Ford C4 transmission is capable of having a dipstick that fits directly into the pan or case.

Identification of the Ford C4 Transmission

Never was the C4 used to power an engine with a displacement greater than 400 cubic inches. Therefore, you can eliminate the C4 unless you are considering another big block than the 400.

If you are looking under the car, a decent place to start is the driver's side tail shaft, where the speedometer cable is attached. Six bolts secure the transfer case or tail shaft to the Ford C4 transmission.

The amount of bolts used to secure the transmission pan is the best indicator of which model of three-speed Ford automatic you are looking at. There is actually no confusion because they all use distinct numbers. The C4 is held together by 11 bolts. Pan shapes vary; however, they are all different from GM automatic transmission shapes. Pan shapes are more uniform.

Every C4 came equipped with an identification tag that was affixed to the gearbox on the passenger side. The C4 is about 17 and 18 inches long and features a roughly square pan with 11 bolts. The pan measures ten by 9 inches.
