The large block has gone through a wide range of different manufacturing cylinder head changes throughout the years. The early heads used what is now known as a closed combustion chamber and were made of both cast iron and aluminum. By 1970, second-generation heads had been endowed with a bigger, open chamber structure that permitted up to 2.250-/1.88-inch valves. The tight chambers had hidden the tiny valves.
While the size and structure of the combustion chamber are significant, most enthusiasts tend to pay more attention to the design of the intake ports. With a flat top or dished piston, this isn't an issue, but with domed pistons, it's a strict requirement. On the other hand, open chamber heads may be installed without hindrance in a closed-chamber, domed piston engine.
If not matched appropriately, the variation in chamber size might cause the compression to move in an unexpected direction. For instance, the roughly 10cc bigger chamber of a short-stroke engine might cause the compression ratio to be drastically reduced if 454 open-chamber heads in a set were installed on a 396.
